ASSC Students

The Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC) Student community's aim is to foster greater involvement of graduate students within the ASSC and improve ways in which the ASSC serves the needs of its student members. Its primary goal is to promote research and debate about consciousness among new researchers.

The ASSC Students committee is currently made up of seven members: three full-voting members of the ASSC and four student affiliate members, including a liaison to the organizing committee of the upcoming annual conference. The changeover between each year's student committee and the next happens at the end of August or early September.

Student membership in the ASSC is available at the very nominal rate of $30 USD/year or $50 USD/two years. Student membership comes with all of the benefits of being a full member save voting privileges. Full details can be found on the membership benefits page.

The 14th Annual Meeting of the ASSC will be held in Toronto, Canada from 24-27 June, 2010

At the Annual Conferences

...We are busy organizing various student activities, including:

  • A student social every year, typically on the second night of the conference.
  • A mentoring program (ASSC-13 Berlin, ASSC-12 Taipei, ASSC-10 Oxford) matching students with senior researchers.
  • Affordable accommodation and roomshare services.

This year in Berlin, we did a "poor person's/student's alternate banquet" for those who did not wish or were not able to attend the conference banquet.

Between Conferences

  • We organize activities like the current ASSC Essay contest, details of which are on the news page.
  • We manage the student pages of the ASSC website.
  • We conduct occasional surveys of the ASSC student members.
  • We alert students to various meetings related to consciousness, study and employment opportunities through our monthly newsletter.
